Sale 44 · Important Australian & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes

Description

Parthia, Orodes II, (57-38 B.C.), drachm, Ecbatana mint, obv. short bearded bust to l., wearing torque (Sell. type ii), rev. archer enthroned to r., mint mark below, (S.7441, Sell.45.9). Good very fine.

This reverse inscription was adopted as the norm by nearly all successors of Orodes, however mechanical copying and ignorance of Greek by the die engravers led to the deterioration of the legends into an almost unrecognizable form.
