Towers Pastoral Agricultural & Mining Association, in silver (48mm), reverse inscribed 'Awarded To/R.Hornsby & Sons/Special Prize/Portable/Steam Engine/1887'. Toned, good extremely fine and rare.
Richard Hornsby (1790-1864) was an engineer and prominent developer of steam engines for use in agricultural science and related areas. The business was further developed by his sons and the firm of R. Hornsby & Sons built the first working experimental diesel engine in 1892; amongst their other important innovations was the caterpillar track in 1905, which was to revolutionise land warefare during the First World War with the introduction of the tank.
