Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), rear admiral, Arctic explorer and Lt-Governor of Van Diemen's Land. Following an outstanding career as a sailor and later an Arctic explorer, Franklin arrived in Hobart Town in 1837 to succeed Colonel Arthur as Lt-Governor. During the period of his governorship he had to cope with great internal and external pressures. He returned to England in 1843 and in 1847 he set off once again to the Arctic to seek the Northwest Passage only to die when in sight of his goal. Franklin's portrait is featured on the Australian five pounds note, 1954-66. With research.
