Description
Troopship Card Currency, issued on the M.S. 'Sobieski' for one penny, c.1940, blue cardboard, 'one penny New Zealand Currency redeemable only during the voyage for which issued' No. 569, stamp dated on back 22.1.1940, together with circular red ship stamp, with other pencil writing (Sutherland 273 [p.193-4], Robb p.54 [illustrates example]). A 1cm tear in top margin, otherwise nearly very fine and very rare.
In order to meet a shortage of metallic currency on troopships conveying New Zealand troops to Egypt in 1940, a series of coloured 'New Zealand Currency' cards were printed on board the ships for various denominations.
