Sale 95 · Important Australian & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes, The Robb Family Collection

Description

Van Diemen's Land, Weavell, John, Hobart Town, currency note, one shilling, 10 Feby 1824 (year 1824 printed), No. 15, hand signed by John Weavell, on printed form, black on white, on unwatermarked paper (type not in McNeice). Corner missing at bottom right, various minor holes mostly as pin holes, some folds, corners with gum adhesions on back, otherwise fine, the note overall being in better than average condition for notes of this period, and very rare.

Ex Dr Alan Nicholson Collection, Noble Numismatics Sale 49 (lot 1507). Weavell is known to have issued other notes for half dollars and sixpences. Weavell early in 1823 had an association with T.J. Lempriere forming a company that also issued notes in their joint name but this partnership was disolved on 27 February 1823. McNeice (Tasmanian Promissory Notes) claims that Weavell left the colony late in December 1823 and all other issued known notes are 1823 or early 1824. This note would appear to be the latest issue for this issuer.
