Lance-Bombardier Gordon Joseph McAllister; Enl.11Mar1940 Darwin; Disch.03Oct1945. GM L G 24Aug1945, C of A Gazette 28Aug1945 'On the night of 27th/28th January the Danmap River burst into flood, sweeping away its banks and isolating several parties of troops on newly formed islands. Lance-Bombardier McAllister immediately organised a party of six men and commenced rescue operations. Having no success in attempts to throw rescue lines to the isolated men he improvised a life line of signal wire and with this strapped to his belt, unhesitatingly entered the water regardless of the violence of the flood and the danger of being overwhelmed by logs and debris sweeping downstream. By this means he made six crossings of the stream, saving the lives of six comrades. By his initiative and courage Lance-Bombardier McAllister was directly responsible for saving the lives of men who would otherwise have been drowned; his doggedness and tenacity in continuing the work for over three hours as an example to the other members of the rescue party who gave him every assistance'. Together with three albums containing Citation, Discharge Certificate, photographs, newspaper clippings.
