Description
Madras Presidency, Indian Style Coinage, Hindu System, Gold pagoda, c.1643-1677, struck at Fort St. George (Madras) mint, (3.35 grams), obv. very crude figure of a deity (probably Hanuman the monkey god of Vijayanagar), rev. plain, (Pr. 1 var., KM. -). Good very fine, very rare.
Ex R.A. Climpson Collection Noble Numismatics Sale 85 (lot 1978), previously from Glendining's Nov. 21, 1974 (lot 423) and Colin E. Pitchfork Collection, Noble Numismatics Sale 48 (lot 1979), with ticket. Pridmore did not have an example of this type from Madras in his collection. The obverse figure is very uncertain and if anything is closer to a gorilla than a monkey.
