TASMANIAN COUNCIL OF EDUCATION, in gold (42mm, 57.5gms) by J.S.Wyon, inscribed around edge 'James W.Whyte, Senior Associate 1870'. FDC and extremely rare.

James Whyte (1820-1882) As a child he lived in Van Dieman's Land, moving to Victoria as a young man. He returned to Tasmania enriched by gold royalties from his property in Clunes, Victoria. Whyte was elected to the Legislative Council in 1856 and became Premier in 1863. He was appointed to the Tasmanian Council of Education in 1870 and the Board of Education in 1876 and was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tasmania.
