Description

Pair: British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. Details shaved on first medal but indications are that a medal was prepared for renaming to Massey but did not proceed, 3160 Pte T.A.Massey 4 Bn. A.I.F. on second medal. Second medal is impressed. Extremely fine.

Together with Memorial Plaque to Theodore Alfred Massey in original box. Ex W.J.D.Mira Collection. Private Theodore Alfred Massey, Manager of a Picture Theatre, Enl.09Aug1915, 4 Inf Bn; Emb.23Mar1916; KIA 04Oct1917, Broodseinde, Belgium; buried at Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium. Noted that Army charged the family threepence per copy for photos of Pte Massey’s grave. This group was in the archival specimens of Amor Medallists, Sydney. Army records show that the medals and Memorial Plaque were forwarded to the family in the 1920s. It appears that Amors may have been asked to supply replacement medals but did not proceed. How they came into possession of the Memorial Plaque is a mystery. Together with research.
