Catherine II, (The Great), (1762 - 1796), 1796 dated Medal or ’Memorial Rouble’ comprising 50 medals or pattern roubles in golden alloy, 50 medals or pattern roubles in polished pewter and 50 medals or pattern roubles in high grade copper, struck to a prooflike/proof finish in limited quantities, FDC. From a total mintage of only 875 pieces of each metal. Catherine’s patronage furthered the evolution of the arts in Russia. She imported classical and European influences which inspired the Russian enlightenment and her foreign policy conquests made Russia dominant in south eastern Europe. She suffered a stroke in 1796 and died before regaining consciousness.
