Third of Exchange, Hobart Town, August 12th 1829, ú100, at thirty days sight of this my third of Exchange, first and second of same Tenor and Date unpaid, Pay to the Order of Gamaliel Butler Esq, for the sum of One Hundred Pounds sterling, signed by J A King to Mrs Sarah King, endorsed on reverse by I.T.Groom, marked (31) at top edge and marked in red ink, I.F.G (31) and also 1st By/ 2nd By, stationary with ship within circle and ornate scroll work top and bottom, below, Book, Hobart Town. Small left bottom edge hole and small tears on right edge but very clear, neat writing and very fine.

Gamaliel Butler entered the legal profession in London in 1801 and came to Hobart Town in 1824. He became a director of the Bank of Van Diemen's Land in 1829 and soon became a successful businessman owning large properties throughout Van Diemen's Land. Three of his sons also entered the legal profession which he established with a R.W.Nutt. This firm became known as Butler, Nutt and Butler and continues to practise today.
