Charles I, (1625 - 1649), Tower mint under king, silver crown, mm castle, issued 1627-8, Group I, type 1b, (29.84 grams), rev. plumes over shield with harp having fearsome bird's head, (S.2754, N.2191, Cooper VIII/X, Brooker 240 (this coin). Toned, round and attractive, very fine and an extremely rare die combination.
Ex Spink, London, December 1984, and previously from the Lord (Rodney) Smith of Marlow Collection, previously purchased by Spink London for John Godfrey Brooker, coming from the V.J.E. Ryan Collection Glendining, London, 22 January 1952 (lot 1063) and from the Ashley Collection. Only one other example is known and it came from the Hall, Larsen (lot 144) and West Country Collector (lot 53) Collections. This example being the Brooker piece, is the better of the two known examples. The Lockett Collection was described in the Pegg sale as inferior in condition. This is the actual coin illustrating the dies VIII/X in F.R. Cooper's monograph.
