Description
William Wyon, laudatory medal, 1854, in bronze (56mm) by L.C.Wyon (BHM 2535; Eimer 1480), obverse, bust of Wyon right, reverse, Britannia holding trident and olive branch, standing between four seahorses rising from the sea, in exergue, Art-Union of London / 1854. A few spots of discolouration otherwise extremely fine.
The master engraver, William Wyon, is the most famous of the Wyon family of medallists. He was appointed Chief Medallist of the Royal Mint and his design of the young Queen Victoria used on coinage (see 1871-1887) still ranks as one of the noblest productions in British numismatics. This medal is one of a series by the Art Union of London.
