2831 T-Cpl George Albert Edward Gilbert, Enl.30Jun1915, WIA 06Nov1917 Belgium KIA 23Aug1918 Chaignes, France. MM LG 16Nov1916 'At Pozieres, France 17/8/16, Pte Gilbert carried messages under very heavy fire, more especially on the night 17/18th August when the telephone line was out and the communication trench blocked in many places through shell fire, he took messages through over the top without hesitation although warned by others that it was extremely unlikely that he would get through'. Bar to MM LG 06Aug1918 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Mont de Merris near Strazeele, France on 14th April 1918. As linesman during an enemy attack, Private Gilbert showed an utter disregard of danger and bravery and coolness of the highest order. Pte Gilbert was out continuously mending and repairing telephone lines under heavy shell and rifle fire. Again on 17th April 1918 he worked mending lines for two hours in an exceedingly heavy barrage. He showed a wonderful spirit of endurance to other linesmen and by his fine example earned the confidence of all ranks'.
