Description

Phrygia, Laodikeia, (c.100-90 B.C.), silver cistophoric tetradrachm, (12.300 grams), obv. cista mystica containing serpent, all within ivy wreath, rev. bow in case between two coiled serpents, to left **[LA]O*, to right a caduceus with fillet, monogram of ANTI above, (cf.S.5147, SNG von Aulock -, SNG Cop. -, BMC 13 [variant monogram]). Off centred, good very fine and unpublished except for the few examples listed all coming from the one hoard.

Ex Noble Numismatics Auction Sale 87 (lot 4535) and previously from the Garth R. Drewry Collection, CNG Triton VIII Sale (lot 1881 part) and previously from Ponterio & Assoc. Auction Sale 63, June 22, 1993 (lot 2597). A extremely rare symbol from a scarce cistophori mint. A similar example in Triton VI (January 14, 2003 lot 425) of the same type with same symbols was sold at US $525 +15%.
