Lot 3933
Sale 48 · Important Australian & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes
Description
Ceylon, Kingdom of Ceylon, (29 B.C. - A.D. 297), AE 31-33, large bronze, obv. symbols tree, elephant, swastica, rev. three hills and similar symbols, (Codrington I on supplementary plate, and p. This Coin, M.5047). Very fine and extremely rare and possibly unique.
Codrington in 1924 illustrates and describes This Coin. He notes that in the Kalmunai division of Batticaloa District two coins were found with one being this coin. Their importance is the addition of a new symbol on each side, it being the horizontal line with loops and projections with this specimen being a major variant to all other known pieces.
