Sir Paul Strzelecki conducted important exploration, geological and scientific work in New South Wales, Victoria and Van Dieman's land during the period 1839-1843. He ascended Australia's highest mountain and named it Mt. Kosciuszko in honour of the Polish democratic leader. He became a British citizen in 1845.
