Family Group (Brothers): Group of Six: 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Pacific Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. NGX24 W.Kalbfell. All medals impressed. Group of Four: 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45; (note, entitled to Australia Service Medal 1939-45 but whereabouts unknown). NX4141 M.R.F.Kalbfell. All medals impressed. Five medals of the first group swing mounted, Pacific Star is separate, second group medals unmounted, extremely fine.
Captain William Kalbfell enlisted at Rabaul, New Guinea on 27 January 1940. According to family sources he was recruited into Army Intelligence because he was fluent in Japanese and he was present at the signing of the treaty with Japan in Tokyo Bay. He was promoted to Major and served with British Commonwealth Occupation Forces Headquarters, Kure, Japan. He discharged from the Army on 16 September 1960 while serving with 4 Int Section. Private Maurice Roy Farquhar Kalbfell, 2/1 Infantry Battalion, enlisted 26 October 1939, died of wounds, 25 April 1941 in Greece. Together with dog tags and Major's dress shoulder boards (KC) for Major W. Kalbfell as well as a Department of Army document certifying the death of and medal entitlement for Private Kalbfell. Accompanied by research with photoscans of Major W. Kalbfell and box for delivery of five medals to M.R.F.Kalbfell.
