M. Lucilius Rufus, (c.101 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.900 grams), obv. Roma helmeted head right, PV behind, all within laurel wreath, rev. Victory in biga to right, RVF above, M.LVCILI in exergue, (S.302 [ú150 EF], Cr.324/1, Syd.599, RSC Lucilia 1). Knock in centre of reverse, toned, very fine and scarce.
The large number of Victory issues at this time are linked to the military activities of Marius who defeated the Teutones and Ambrones at Aquae Sextiae in 102 and the Cimbri at Vercellae in 101.
