Description

Macedon, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), gold stater, (8,38 grams), uncertain Macedonian mint, issued 330-320 B.C., obv. head of Athena to right in crested Corinthian helmet, ornamented with coiled snake, rev. Nike standing to left, holding wreath in outstretched hand, and ship mast in right hand, without any symbols in field, to right **ALEXANDPOU*, (cf.S.6702; cf.Price 168A [on obverse style], M.-, cf.BMC 168A). Well centred extremely fine.

Slabbed by ICG as AU53. Ex Forum Ancient Coins with their ticket. Several mints have been identified by Price as issuing staters without letters or symbols. While they all have some similarity it is the obverse with its characteristic hair style that fits closest to Price 164-168 (uncertain Macedonian mint) although a stater from this area with symbols or letters has not been previously published. The obverse die is very similar to H (Pl.25) in Troxell. A quarter stater was issued from the same series (Price 169A) without letters and or symbol and this suggests the possibility of a similar stater belonging to the same series.
