Italy, Bruttium, Croton (Kroton), Silver Stater or Nomos, c.520 B.C., 7.89 grams, Obv. Delphic tripod, with three handles, and legs terminating in lion's feet, with two serpents emerging from the bowl, to l., legend QPO, Rev. Incuse Delphic tripod with three handles, and serpents emerging from bowl, (cf.S.255, Weber 997 (similar dies, p.209, Pl.39), SNG ANS 230, SNG Cop 1735, SNG Fitz. 743, SNG Ash. 1463, McLean 1645, SNG Lockett 597, BMC 1 [p.342]). Edge flaws otherwise good very fine and rare.
Ex Ira and Larry Goldberg Auction Sale 14 June 2-5, 2002 (Long Beach Sale) (lot 4279). and from the Shirley Barr Sage Collection. The coin is illustrated in her book 'Biblical Numismatics, Thirty Pieces of Silver' Coin number 29 illustrated. The issue may be even earlier as 530-520 B.C. (Attianese). This issue is known for many different dies. Many are in fine condition with various symbols in field. The piece is of the earliest style and type with large thin flan.
