Description
Nero, (A.D. 54-68), silver denarius, issued c.66-67, Rome mint, (2.886 grams), obv. laureate head to right of Nero, around IMP NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS, rev. Jupiter seated left on throne, holding thunderbolt and sceptre, IVPPITER CVSTOS around, (cf.S.1943, RIC 64, BMC -, RSC 121). A nice example, dull grey patina, very fine and a very rare obverse legend type.
Ex Gorny & Mosch, Auction Sale 95 March 9, 1999, (lot 728). The issue is in all probability a reference to Nero's deliverance from the conspiracy of C. Calpurnius Piso in A.D. 65.
