South India, c.18th century. gold half fanams and gold eighth fanams, total weight 4.59g. A group of tiny gold fractional Fanams from the Karnataka area. Fine to very fine. (92)
Ex New York Sale, Auction XI, January 11, 2006 (lot 642). According to Narasimhamurthy in Coins and Currency systems in Karnataka, the coin named Haga weighed 1.5grains, the Visa was 0.8grains and the Bele was half of the Visa. Such coins were prevalent during the times of Hoysala ruler Vishnuvardhana.
