Lot 1409

Sale 83 · Important Australian & World Coins & Banknotes

Description

George V, Melbourne Mint proof or specimen set, 1916M, florin, shilling, sixpence and threepence. Has been dipped, the sixpence and threepence with brilliant fields, the florin and shilling frosted, the shilling also with characteristic 45ø die rotation, nearly FDC and very rare. (4)

The florin has minor hairline die breaks on the reverse, which is unusual for proof strikings but not for these first ever issues of specimen coins by the Mint. This set, acquired from Downies in 1995, is sold with their ticket.
