Description
Pair: Queen's South Africa Medal - three bars - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901; Colonial Long Service Good Conduct Medal. Capt M.G.Hipwell. S.Aus: I.B. on first, Capt M.G.Hipwell on second. Engraved. Very fine.
Captain Malcolm George Hipwell was born 3 March 1862. He entered service in the Land Office Survey department and was later transferred to the Audit Office, where he remained for the duration of his career. An accomplished rifeman, Hipwell was Secretary of the South Australia National Rifle Association from 1894-1901 and Adelaide Rifle Club Champion 1897-99. On 27 October 1886 Hipwell was appointed Captain and later senior officer of the 5th Contigent to South Africa in 1901. He died of enteric fever on 25 May 1901 at Kroonstart, Orange Free State. With extensive research including war graves correspondence, photographs, copies of obituaries, booklet on rifle shooting by recipient and other research.
