Description

Melbourne Volounteer Rifle Regiment Medal 1858. To Corporal John McNee No.1 Gun Detachment V Vict Rifle R 24th May 1858 engraved. Very fine and very rare.

Violent bushranger attacks near Melbourne during the 1840s and the Government's perceived inadequate response led to a civilian appeal for a stronger local armed presence. In 1854 Governor Sir Charles Hotham approved an Act to establish a volunteer corps not exceeding 2000 men with personally appointed officers. The Melbourne Volunteer Rifle Regiment, soon after known as the Victoria Volunteer Rifle Regiment, was the first unit formed under the new legislation. With regimental research and correspondence.
