Description
Thrace, Byzantion, (c.340-320 B.C.), silver siglos (Persian standard), (5.272 grams), obv. cow standing to left, on dolphin to left, foreleg raised, above **PU, countermark in field, rev. quadripartite incuse square of mill-sail pattern; another similar Bithynia, Kalchedon, (c.340-320 B.C.), (5.348 grams), obv. bull standing to left on corn-ear, above **KAL[C]*, rev. similar, (S.1579, 3738, SNG BMC Black Sea 21ff. 112ff, [siglos], SNG Cop. 476, SNG von Aulock 482). Good very fine or better. (2)
Two similar pieces from the twin cities which faced each other side on opposite sides of the Bosphorus (at modern Istanbul, Turkey).
