Royal Society, Royal Prize Medal, in silver (72mm) by G.W.DeSaulles, reverse after W.Wyon, manufactured by the Royal Mint, obv. head of Edward VII left, rev. standing figure of Sir Isaac Newton between drawings of his theories (Eimer 1861, H.202/20, BHM. 3713), inscribed around edge 'Professor John Joly F.R.S. 1910'. Cased. Old light scratch in front of King's head and neck, otherwise nearly uncirculated.

John Joly (1857-1933) Irish geologist and physicist, studied sciences and engineering at Trinity College, Dublin before becoming a Professor of geology there in 1897. Joly devised the steam calorimeter used to find the specific heat of minerals and the specific heat of gases at a constant volume.
