Description
Titus, (A.D. 79-81), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issue of A.D. 80, (23.95 grams), obv. IMP T CAES DIVI VESP F AVG P M TR P P P COS VIII, laureate head to right, rev. Mars advancing to right, carrying spear, (S.2531 [£160 F], RIC 182 (Lugdunum mint), BMC 310-1 (Pl.57, 6), CBN 324, cf.C.203). Heavy tooling and re-engraving on the reverse creating an unusual type and style, being a modification of the Mars reverse, the obverse with some light tooling and smoothing about the legend, otherwise good very fine/fine, the portrait better.
The reverse re-engraving creates a heavy footed 'Indian' with his spear attached with feathers etc., most unusual and very interesting.
