Corinthia, Corinth, Augustus, (31 B.C. - A.D. 14), AE As, issued 2-1 B.C., issued by C. Servilius and M. Antoninius Hipparchus, (5.914 grams), obv. bare head of Augustus to right, CAE[SAR] downwards to left, COR[INT] downwards to right, rev. heads of Gaius and Lucius Caesar facing each other around traces of C SERVILIO C F PRIMO M ANTONIO HIPPARCHO IIVIR, C L between. (S.166 [£75], BMC 505, SNG Cop. 204, Amandry Group XIb, obv. 5, rev. 15, Lanz BCD Sale 105, lot 339). Portraits fine, weak legends, very rare.
Ex BCD Collection [from duplicates] and purchased from Coin Galleries Mail Bid Auction sale July 22, 1992 (lot 474), lot includes tickets and photographs. This example comes from one of only two known from this set of dies. Amandry records 66 examples from all dies of this type in his standard reference Michael Amandry 'Le Monnayage des Duovirs Corinthiens', Paris 1988, most of which are in public collections.
