Euboia, Chalcis, (100-90 B.C.), AE 25 noted in RPC as an as, (9.739 grams), obv. Hera with sceptre in chariot, traces of **CALKI / DEWN* above and in exergue, rev. within wreath **QEO / KLHS / PAUSA / NIOU*, (S.2491, RPC 1343, Picard Emission 94 (p.122-123 and Pl.XXII), BMC 89, [Pl.XXI, 24], SNG Cop.450, Lanz BCD Sale Catalogue 111 [lot 273, realised 420+ euros]). Brown patina, near very fine and very rare.

Ex BCD Collection (with ticket) and Classical Numismatic Group (with ticket), previouly obtained near Thebes, Boeotia. The issue is identified an important agnostic type, D.Knoepfler (BCH 103 [1979] p.165-188) notes the issue as a monument to an athlete. The name of the athelete (Theokles Pausaniou) appears in the reverse inscription. This athlete with this name appears on an inscription. RPC dates the issue as 1st century B.C., Picard dates it to the early Imperial period. Only a very few examples have appeared on the market, RPC notes 17 examples with only four in private collections these all being the BCD collection.
