Commodus, (A.D. 177-192), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 184-185, obv. laureate head of Commodus to right, around M COMMODVS ANTON AVG PIVS BRIT, rev. Victory seated to right on shields, inscribing shield set on knee, around P M TR P X IMP VII COS IIII P P, S C across field, in exergue VICT BRIT, (S.1652, RIC 452, C.946). Light brown patina, nearly very fine/fine and rare.
This issue is part of a select group of rare coins of the second and third century, from Hadrian to Septimus Severus, that relate to victories in Britain. As Commodus felt that his British victory was significant he in this commemorative of that victory in Britain added Britannicus to his other titles.
