Septimius Severus, (A.D. 193-211), silver denarius, Alexandria mint, issued A.D. 194, (3.256 grams), obv. laureate head of Septimius Severus to right, around IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG, rev. around AEQVI TAS II, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae, (S.6258, RIC 344, RSC 18). Poorly struck and irregular edge as usual, very fine and a rare mint issue.
Ex Roger A. Bickford-Smith Collection (author of study of this series 'The Imperial Mints in the East for Septimius Severus' in Rivista Italiana 1994/5); and from CNG Auction Sale 47 (lot 1768 part). An issue of silver from one of several temporary mints in the east, Alexandria in Egypt struck coins for Pescennius Niger but went over to Severus in February 194. The issues small in number continued for a year from this mint.
