Description

Macedon, Uncertain (Philiooi?), Augustus, (27 B.C. - A.D. 14), AE 16, (2.928 grams), obv. bare head of Augustus to right, AVG behind, rev. two priests ploughing to right, (S.-, RPC 1656, BMC 86-88, SNG Cop. 282); another similar, Tiberius, (A.D. 14-37), AE 17, obv. bare head of Tiberius to right, TI AVG behing, rev. as above, (S.268, RPC 1657, BMC 89-91, SNG Cop.283). Light green attractive glazed tone, very fine, very scarce. (2)

Originally considered as being issues from Parium in Mysia but many examples found have come from the region of Macedon and Thrace. Grant initially thought they had a broad circulation but recent finds in an archaeological context at Philippi lend support to that as the city of issue. The mint of attribution awaits full confirmation.
