Italy, Lucania, Velia, (c.305/4-293/290 B.C.), silver nomos, stater or didrachm, (7.380 grams), Period VII, workshop of Philiston, obv. head of Athena to left, wearing crested Athenian helmet with winged hippocamp, monogram before head, rev. lion walking to right, **UELHTWN* in exergue, trident above lion **F* I either side, (cf.S.454, Williams 512 [these dies, Obv.257, rev.360], SNG Munich 889 [same dies], SNG Ash. 1375-6 [same dies], SNG ANS 1389 [same dies]). Toned, graffiti scratch on reverse, otherwise very fine or better and a scarce mint.
