Description

Germany, Buchenwold Concentration Camp, fifty pfennig Wertmarke note Number 87285, variety with slanting legs of the M (Campbell No. 3951b). Very fine and scarce.

The Wertmarke notes were issued as a reward for good behaviour, diligent work or the completion of special projects. It was used for purchase of 'luxury items' such as cigarettes, extra portions of food or special services. Mr. Karl Neufeld was the recipient of this and the following note. He was an inmate at several concentration camps, and initially placed in 1943 at Auschwitz Concentration Camp, in 1944 he was moved to Buna Monowitz Concentration Camp and finally to Buchenwald Concentration Camp. His camp number was A4039 which was observed on his arm by us at Noble Numismatics. He worked at that camp's canteen from where he got the two notes.
