Lot 647

Sale 76 · Important Australian & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes

Description

Scotland, James VI (1567-1625) before accession to English throne, seventh coinage, gold rider, 1594, obv. king in armour and holding sword riding right, rev. crowned shield, (S.5458). Attractive, good very fine and rare.

Ex Marshall Collection, Spink, London, March 31, 2004 (lot 294) and previously from Spink Numismatic Circular November 1943 (22620, œ7.10.0) with its original ticket. A.H. Baldwin writing to R.C. Lockett in 1916 concerning a James VI rider in the Alexander Mann sale noted that several are being 'found on the Norfolk coast. I have seen ten or so'. A significant number of riders seem to be old sea salvage coins from this source and appears to include the above example.
