Sale 75 · Important Australian, British & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes
Description
Bank of New South Wales, Moreton Bay, one pound, North Brisbane 1 Sept 18(53) No.18574 (MVR 7b), handsigned by William Richardson, director (Manager designated). Expertly restored, possibly the only example in private hands, nearly fine and extremely rare.
Issued when Brisbane was part of Colony of NSW. The Bank of New South Wales was the first bank to open a branch in the Moreton Bay settlement in 1850 and it was also the Bank's first move in its wide coverage of Australasia. Banknotes were urgently required for a distinct shortage of specie and so the London printers rushed forms to a new settlement by screw steamer. William Richardson was a sharefolder of the Bank and was appointed the first manager at a salary of œ400 per annum. Ex Spink Noble Australia Sale 36 (lot 2693).
