Description

Muhammad Akbar II, (A.H. 1203), (A.D.1788) first reign, silver rupee, struck at Saharanpur mint, issued A.H. 1203 (A.D. 1788), Regnal year 1, obv. Muhammad Akbar name at top, date centre left, rev. mint name at top, Regnal year lower left, (KM. 760). Good very fine and rare.

The young Muhammad Akbar was made puppet emperor by the Rohilla leader, Ghulam Qadir, as part of his machinations to wheedle out more money from the hapless Mughal royal family. The ploy failed and Muhammad Akbar's first 'reign' lasted for a few months only. (See ONS Newsletter 175, article by Dr Bhandare).
