Sale 75 · Important Australian, British & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes

Description

Henry III, (1216-1272), sterling silver imitation penny, long cross issue, imitating class 3b, (1.27 grams), issued post 1250, copying a Willem of London penny, obv. hEIRICVS REX III', rev. WIL/LEM/LVN/DON, (cf.S.1363, BNJ 1966 (p.87) J.J. North No.24, Pl.5 [This Coin], Westfalische Auktion lot No.58 [This Coin]). Very fine and rare.

This coin had an estimate in the Westfalische Auction of 500 DM. It lot also shares the same obverse die as the next lot. The obverse die shares a reverse die attributed to Henry II (1263-1294) or III (1294-1318), Lord of Kuinre. This suggests this coin was probably struck at Kuinre.
