Sale 74 · Important Australian, British & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes

Description

Sultans of Delhi, Ala' al-Din Muhammad, (A.H. 695-715, A.D. 1296-1316), gold tanka with nine sides, undated an uncertain mint (Delhi?), (cf.G&G D221). Very fine and extremely rare.

Unpublished and a previously unknown type (although a square example is noted by G&G). The legend in places is somewhat crude and may be a contemporary imitation. However the wear and overall legend characteristics of this coin lends it to be a regular limited issue of this ruler in a most usual shape.
