Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, (A.D. 161-180), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 145, (24.44 grams), obv. bare head of Marcus Aurelius to right, around AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS II, rev. SC across the field, Minerva advancing to right holding javelin and shield, (S.4808, RIC 1243a, C.576). On a large thick flan, with a attractive dark green patina, well centred, several striking flaws on the obverse, otherwise and good very fine, and rare.
Ex Sotheby's, London, January 13, 1898 (uncertain lot [114-5,117] cost 1/-), and subsequently the Cornelius C. Vermeule III Collection, sold in Triton III (lot 1712 part) for the benefit of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; with old tickets.
