Description

Great Britain, Queen Victoria, unofficial pattern crown, dated 1879, coronetted young head left, shield reverse, by Donald R. Golder, proofs in 925 silver, copper and aluminium bronze. FDC. (120)

This pattern reverse design resembles that of the 1845-48 currency crown series, the difference being the omission of the floral ornament below the shield and different lettering styles and sizes. There were no currency crowns struck for general use between 1853 and 1887 and this recent pattern coin serves to show how an intermediate Victoria currency crown could have looked. Total mintage 800 sets.
