TIBERIUS, (A.D. 14-37), Sarmatia (Ukraine area), barbarous imitation silver denarius, tribal issue, issued after A.D. 42, (3.13 grams), obv. laureate head of Tiberius to right, around TI CAESAR DIVI AVGN AVGVSTVS, rev. wreath with legend in three lines, EX SC OB CIVES SERVATOS, (cf.Forrer 'Keltische Numismatik' Plate XL for other types). Light scratches over the field on obverse and reverse, otherwise good fine and extremely rare.

Ex. Giessener Munzhandlung Auction, Munich, Sale 71 May 3, 1995, (lot 620). $$ A most extraordinary crude copy of an obverse type of Tiberius muled with a reverse type of Claudius. The legend is free of error and is clearly visible. One can assume that the celator could read and write, although noticeable is the clumsy style portrait. The denarius is of good silver a litle light in weight however coins of this type were issued between the Danube and Theiss from the time of the the Roman Republic until the late 4th century. These coins were mostly attributed to the Sarmatians. See hoard find Kecel 2, and Elemer Jonas. The Sarmatians were people who lived on the Hungarian plains to the Ukraine.
