Gallo-Belgic Imported to Britain, Uninscribed Coinage, Gallo-Belgic E, Ambiani type issued during Gallic War, (c.58 - 51 B.C.), stater, 6.07 grams, obv. blank, rev. crude Celticized disjointed horse to right, with pellet below horse, (S.7, Norweb Sylloge No.5 this coin, same reverse die as Yorkshire Sylloge 845, Van A. 52-1). Good very fine and rare.
ex V.M. Brand collection, ex Norweb collection and Spink (London) auction 45 (lot 1). In a paper 'The Origins of Coinage in Britain' Dr. John Kent suggests that the date for the Gallo-Belgic E series should be revised to that given above, and quotes Simone Scheers to suggest that this coinage represents the last independent coinage of the Belgae in Gaul, struck to specifically finance the war with Caesar.
