Sale 73 · Important Australian, British & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes

Description

Port Phillip, Kangaroo Office pattern issue fourpence in gold (41.00 grams) (1853) by W.J.Taylor, London, from different dies to other known examples (A.781, Heyde R7). The reverse die turned through 90 degrees and was struck again to achieve a deep strike, the obverse only slightly doubled. The only known example and as struck.

Taylor used various dies for his token gold, silver and bronze coinage, all known fourpences (Spink Australia Sale 18) and Andrews illustration of A.781 seem to come from a common pair of dies. This piece comes from another pair of dies apparently unpublished.
