Madras Presidency, Indian Style Coinage, Hindu System, Gold star pagoda, c.1740-1807, Struck at Madras mint, (3.31 grams), obv. crude half standing figure of a deity, rev. five pointed star within dotted borders, (Pr. 9, KM. 303). Nearly extremely fine, scarce.
The design for this coinage was determined in 1740 and declared the standard pagoda of Madras 9th April 1741. Referred to in the Company's records as the 'Madras current or star pagoda'
