Marcus Aurelius, (A.D. 161-180), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 168, (29.32 grams), obv. laureate head of Marcus Aurelius to right, around M ANTONINVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX, rev. around TR POT XXII IMP V COS III, FORT RED in exergue, SC across the field, Fortuna seated to left holding rudder and cornucopia, (S.-, cf.RIC 917, C.213). On a large thick flan, with a attractive light brown patina, well centred and good very fine/very fine, a type with wheel at base unlisted in RIC.

Ex Serge Boutin, Paris, December 21, 1951 (100 FFr.), and subsequently the Cornelius C. Vermeule III Collection, sold in Triton III (lot 1712 part) for the benefit of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, with old tickets, including one indicating a price 350 FFr .
