Description

Egypt, Alexandria, Antinous (A.D. d.130), issue in honour of the deceased Antinous favourite of Hadrian, AE hemidrachm, year 19 = A.D. 134-135, (19.744 grams), obv. Antinous draped bust to right, around traces of legend as usual, rev. Antinous as Hermes on horseback to right, holding caduceus, across [L I**Q*], (S.3899, Datt. 2080, Koln 1275). Good - very good and very rare, with an old ticket.

This is one of a series of rare issues showing the enigmatic relationship between Hadrian and the Bithynian youth Antinous. He became the emperor's 'beloved' accompanying him on his extensive tours. He was accidently drowned in the Nile in 130. His death resulted in a large output of coinage.
