Lesbos, Mytilene, c.521-478 B.C., electrum hekte (2.568 grams), Bodenstedt dates 497 B.C., obv. head of roaring lion to right, rev. incuse head of calf to right, (S.4240 [£600]; Bodenstedt 13 [same dies as obv. e/ rev. **l*], Boston 1679ff., BMC 17ff., Weber 5603-4). Flan crack, otherwise extremely fine and scarce.

Ex Triton V, Auction Sale New York, January 15-6, 2002 (lot 1418, illustrated). Bodenstedt notes 140 examples of this spectacular type from 22 obverse dies. Many examples known are in published collections.
